2015 was full of exciting events for iKapa and saw the launch of the annual Cape Town International Dance Festival. The dynamic event showcased 12 dance companies on the Artscape Theatre stage and the outdoor stage in Gugulethu.
As part of the Maboneng Township Arts Experience, visitors from Northwestern University and Coffeebeans recently enjoyed an exciting township gallery tour of works by talented local artist, Musoke-Lule James.
The iKapa Youth Theatre positively influenced hundreds of children from various organisations and backgrounds by expressing their knowledge and passion for dance through performances and interactive workshops, and during the month of September, this team inspired audiences at a number of events.
Theo Ndindwa, co-founder of iKapa Dance Theatre with Tanya Arshamian, was recently recognised by etv and eNCA as a South African Hero. This is in recognition for the incredible work he, and the iKapa team does by offering dance as a means of expression, direction and social transformation within township communities.
iKapa Dance Theatre was happy to partner with Safmarine staff to host a Mandela Day initiative on 18 July 2015. This took place at our newly built Arts & Culture Studio at Bonga Primary School in Gugulethu Township, Cape Town which had been sponsored by Safmarine in 2014. With the energetic help of the Safmarine team, and the students of the iKapa Outreach Programme who are taught at the studio, we were able to beautify and upgrade the space with a clean up, a fresh coat of paint and some new plants.
iKapa Dance Theatre recently hosted USA’s Step Afrika!, a collaboration which enabled 60 youth from across Cape Town to learn under the expert intruction of the first professional company specialising in Stepping.
The first Cape Town International Dance Festival will take place in Cape Town from November 27 through to December 4, 2015.
Interested artists are invited to apply before 10 July, 2015.
iKapa Dance Theatre is establishing and creating South Africa’s first Cape Town International Dance Festival. The Festival will consist of live performances of dance, as a performed art, from local, African and other international companies from around the world.
We are thrilled to announce that through the generous support of SAFMARINE, the iKapa Training and Outreach Programme now has its very own Dance Centre in Gugulethu. The new space is situated in a brand new building and offers a fantastic studio for the Training and Outreach, and Apprenticeship Programmes offered by iKapa as well as community art groups.
