Step Afrika! Reaches Youth in Cape Town

iKapa Dance Theatre hosted USA’s Step Afrika! for a Youth Workshop from 29 June to 4 July 2015, a collaboration which enabled 60 youth from across Cape Town to learn under the expert intruction of the first professional company specialising in Stepping.

Students from across Cape Town including the townships of Khayalitsha, Gugulethu and Nyanga as well as suburban areas participated in the exciting workshop. Students were transported to the workshop venue by Golden Arrown busses and iKapa vehicles and enjoyed a full day’s workshop from 9am to 3pm each day. Lunch was provided and each student also received a Workshop T-shit which they wore for the showcase on the last day and which will be a momento of the fun and learning of the workshop.

Not only did the project raise the awareness of Step Afrika! and the dance form of Stepping, but it managed to positively reach 60 students and  teach the basics of new dance form and one which is likely to be incorporated into local dance creations. The experience also brought attention to the local talent and the work that iKapa Dance Theatre is doing with yout across the country. All the youth enjoyed the workshops, the style and the discipline that was provided by the company and its teachers.

We look forward to future projects with Step Afrika! and the US Embassy in Cape Town who not only gracefully support cross cultural exchanges but also the work of iKapa Dance Theatre and our initiatives.
