iKapa News September 2013

Thank You for Your Generosity!

The iKapa team would like to take this opportunity and extend its sincere thanks to supporters of iKapa Dance Theatre (you), the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and the National Arts Council of South Africa for the past & recent funding received.

Though funding has been scarce over the past few months, the organisation stands strong in its vision of a culturally diverse and high quality Arts & Culture sector in South Africa, that contributes to a healthy, inspired and socially empowered society. We would like to share with you the most recent happenings at iKapa.

A NEW SPACE TO INSPIRE!

We have been awarded space at the YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTRE, Tsoga Centre, in the community of Samora Michel, Philippi. iKapa has access to the centre’s beautifully designed and eco-friendly administrative offices, as well as its surrounding facilities. It is here that we have been able to establish a NEW Training & Outreach school where over one hundred new students may receive weekly training in dance, music and drama. The centre has also become the home for iKapa’s Youth Dance Theatre, which convenes on the weekends.

Partnering with GIVENGAIN

We are proud to announce that iKapa has been selected as a “cause” by GIVENGAIN, a global philanthropic movement connecting Activists and Causes using a secure and globally trusted fundraising site for monthly contributions.

You can be a part of the INSPIRATION IN MOTION with no hassle at all, by becoming a Child Sponsor. All it takes is 100ZAR/10GBP/10Euros/10USD per month to make a huge difference in South Africa’s struggling communities. With these funds we are hoping to maintain a safe, structured and creative environment for the 300 disadvantaged children attending dance classes six times a week in our new facilities.

Your contribution will ensure that our students continue on the path of self-development, nutritional stability and a productive education with job-placement opportunities. iKapa also provides its students with uniforms, dance wear, transport, skilled and passionate teachers, chaperoned excursions, theatre trips and much more.

Why Do We Teach Dance?

Extra-curricular activities, like dance classes create a space where learners can experience a greater sense of purpose. These classes provide life-skills such as teamwork, discipline and confidence.

Talented learners can later join the Youth Dance Company and possibly progress through iKapa’s apprenticeship program. The classes also provide a positive alternative to negative activities such as substance abuse, as well as enhance social and personal development.

The Training & Outreach school provides numerous performance opportunities throughout the year. Students are invited to perform at festivals, the bi-annual iKapa showcases, and a variety of other performances.

TRAINING & OUTREACH SCHOOL.

The iKAPA TRAINING & OUTREACH SCHOOL has grown to serve 300 students across five centres. The students are close to completing the second term and have attended a Winter Intensive Training School and a career fair. Ikapa Dance will perform on Heritage day at the Youth Development Centre in Samora Michel with selected students who form the YOUTH DANCE THEATRE, which recently performed at Artscape for iKapa’s MY SPACE? Season, Artscape School Festival as well as the Shakespeare Schools Festival where they presented a newly created Romeo & Juliet, choreographed by the iKapa Directors.

ONPOINTE DANCE STUDIO

We run classes every Monday and Wednesday at the iKapa Company Studio in Seapoint and are currently accepting registrations for the next Foundations course which has proved very popular with adults who wish to join the contemporary dance scene. The Performance Course students have just performed at Artscape on 20-23 June as a supporting act in the MY SPACE? production. The next scheduled performance is on 24 November 2013 for the iKapa Dance IMBIZO.
